ICARE/My Golden Character

ICARE

Our International LGS schools have instituted the ICARE guidance program, emphasizing Integrity, Creativity, Achievement, Respect, and Empathy. This initiative aims to instill these core values in students, fostering a holistic development approach that goes beyond academic success. By prioritizing integrity, encouraging creativity, celebrating achievements, promoting respect, and nurturing empathy, the program equips students with a robust ethical foundation for success in a diverse and interconnected global society.

My Golden Character

Our Light Academy school branches offering Kenyan National Curriculum follow “My Golden Character” guidance program with core values of Wisdom, Truthfulness, Resourcefulness, Self-Control, Determination, Cleanliness, and Punctuality. Good character development is not found on posters or in the “word of the month.” Good character develops over time, and requires an intentional, sustained effort on the part of the school to live its core values (such as respect, empathy and integrity) in everything it does from academics to extracurricular activities.

Moral action is the central practice of character education. LGS students need to “know” and “do” good in their everyday activities and in the world around them. By grappling with real-life challenges and reflecting on those experiences, students develop a practical understanding of their values, and acquire the moral sense of giving of oneself. LGS students learn that they can make a difference in their lives, and the lives of others, by choosing to “do good.”
By recognizing opportunities for moral action, schools show that they are thoughtful and intentional in their efforts to help students learn from these experiences. Moral action is how learning happens, both ethical and intellectual.

Mentoring Values

WHO ARE CLASS MENTORS

Our mentors, who are dedicated teachers, play a pivotal role in the ICARE guidance program by working closely with students to impart essential character education. The mentorship model is designed to provide personalized guidance, with male mentors for boys and female mentors for girls, fostering a supportive and inclusive environment. This ensures that students receive tailored guidance, allowing them to develop not only academically but also personally, embodying the values of Integrity, Creativity, Achievement, Respect, and Empathy in their everyday lives. Through this mentorship approach, International LGS schools strive to create a nurturing educational community where students can thrive both intellectually and ethically.

Each class has a mentoring lesson once a week and the mentor teachers prepare lessons in accordance with the ICARE/My Golden Character value.

MENTORING DEPARTMENT ACTIVITIES

HOME VISITS

Our mentors conduct home visits to meet the families of their students and get an opportunity to also discuss social and academic progress with parents of the students by so doing a collaboration is done towards the holistic success of the students.

TEA TALKS

Tea Talk, a cherished tradition at our school, involves weekly sessions where supervisors and students engage in casual conversations over a cup of tea. This relaxed setting fosters open dialogue, allowing students to share thoughts and concerns. Beyond academics, supervisors become trusted allies, offering guidance in a supportive atmosphere. Tea Talk creates a sense of camaraderie, strengthening the bond between educators and students, contributing to a holistic educational experience centered around genuine connection and understanding.

COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECTS

Every class is allocated a community service project that they undertake with the guidance of their mentors that they seek to complete through a term. Community service projects help in building character and nurturing essential values like empathy and concern to the less fortunate. It gives students a great platform to understand the need of giving back to their communities. This exposure not only refines their social skills but also their cultural proficiency, ensuring a more interconnected and harmonious society.

READING CAMPS

Light Group of schools allows students to get international certificates about leadership. Reading programs foster the leadership skills of students. We believe that “Today a reader, tomorrow a leader” motto.

LEADERSHIP TRAINING

The mentorship program at International LGS schools serves as a cornerstone for fostering leadership qualities among students. Through one-on-one guidance, our dedicated teachers empower students to develop crucial leadership skills, encouraging them to take initiative and make informed decisions. Additionally, the opportunity for students to vie for elective seats in the students’ council further amplifies their leadership development. This democratic process allows students to actively participate in shaping the school community, honing their organizational, communication, and teamwork skills. By combining mentorship with a platform for elected roles, we cultivate a culture that not only values leadership but actively provides avenues for students to exercise and refine their leadership abilities, preparing them for future challenges and responsibilities.

"Democracy cannot succeed unless those who express their choice are prepared to choose wisely. The real safeguard of democracy, therefore, is education."
